What do you value the most? Is it time with your family, your friends, your children, your possessions, your work, or your hobby?

What is the focus of your life. Can you tell the story of your life's focus in the time it takes to make an elevator ride?

With answers to these questions, anyone can know a lot about you; what makes you tick.

AXIS develops these questions and helps you to apply them to your teenage children or grand children. You could just as well apply them to adults. I know there is certainly a cultural generation gap, and I happen to sit smack-dab in the middle of it; a little older than the kids, but not yet a parent. And already, the strain of the generation gap can be felt. The truth be told, it is also a spiritual gap in discipleship. That is why I appreciate what is being done here by the AXIS team to facilitate bridging the differences and bringing people together in Love and Understanding. Culture translation here is really about discipleship and evangelism for the next generation in a relevant and attractive way.
With the current issue of youth and young adults falling away from the church and Christianity, this is a must read for parents of children from 8 years old into their 20's. The book provided a lot of practical, useful and easily implemented advice and direction. I will refer back to this book again and again. Well done!
The authors make clear points about how much time the current culture has available to teach my children, and they back the idea up with affirmative details. Defining the term "cultural translators," reminded me to view my conversations with my children about culture, as part of discipleship. How To Talk To Kids About Pop Culture also gave me a glimpse into the new landscape of parenting teens, a lot has changed during the 13 year span I have with raising pre-adolescent children to adulthood. I am motivated more than ever to navigate intentionally the conversations with my last daughter, as I continue to make grace and truth deposits, while discussing unquestioned answers, which pop culture preaches.

We are preparing for the arrival of an exchange student, so the timing of this book was felicitous! I read the whole thing in under an hour, but it will take much longer to process all of the concepts and challenges that it offers to parents! As I was finishing it, I found I wasn't thinking in terms of just where our teen might spend her time and who she might follow, but also what example I am setting in those areas! So worth your time to read this, and reread it, and underline, and highlight... )
Very concise, well-written, culturally relevant, and profound. The Axis team has done a great job of developing the premise of this book - that it's not whether or not your children are being discipled, but rather *who* is discipling them. This book explores the reality of modern discipleship and hits it's mark hard, without being heavy-handed or condemning. Discipling children in previous generations used to be automatic, but with ever-increasing access outside influences, parents are being drowned out, and children are receiving answers to the most important questions in life in subtle, and increasingly not-so-subtle ways, via music, TV, and social media. Accepting this new paradigm and adapting to it is crucial to effectively raising children in The Age of Distraction.
